Mortal Instruments Trilogy

 Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

After witnessing a murder at club in New York City,  15 year old Clary Fray is immediately pulled into a world that before was invisible to her. She soon befriends Jace Wayland and his adopted siblings Isabelle and Alec Lightwood, who are Shadowhunters. Shadowhunters are humans who have angel blood in them who fight off deamons that come from different worlds. Soon after she meets Jace, her mother is captured by Valentine, an ex-Shadowhunter who tried to rid the world of deamons and Downworlders (half human, half deamons, such as werewolves and faries) in an extreme fashion. The life she once new and the person she though she was dissappears. Now Clary must find out who she is while trying to save her mother, and help her new friends stop Valentine from returning to power. I read the first book, CIty of Bones for a summer reading requirement, but right after I finished it I wanted to read the other two books. The characters are so unique and lovable. Clare creates a vivid and beautiful world and brings the reader through it with wonderful descriptions. The plot was excellent, it was suspensful and dramatic, but it was not overly done. I really encourage others to read this book, especially those who enjoy fantasy novels

Wake by Lisa McMann

Wake by Lisa McMann
Most people don’t remember their own dreams, but Janie Hannagan remembers them. Ever since she was little, she has had the ability to slip into dreams that were not her own. The problem is that she doesn’t know how to control it. Whenever someone falls asleep in study hall, she is sucked into their dream. She keeps this ability a secret- well, she does until her neighbor Cabel Strumheller sees- and remembers her- in one of his dreams. Now Janie is overloaded by her mixed feelings about Cabel, finding scholarships for college, and trying to handle her power. This is the first book of McMann’s trilogy. At first the story was a little slow, but it soon picked up pace and my interest. The characters are lovable, and the dialogue is witty. It didn’t have too much of a climax, but I’m sure there will be more to come in the next two books. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes science fiction or modern fantasy stories.-Amanda M.

Dreamhunter Duet by Elizabeth Knox

Dreamhunter Duet Books by Elizabeth Knox
These two books take place an alternate universe in New Zealand around the early 1900’s. This world is very similar to our own, with one exception, a invisible world called The Place. This mysterious world is only accessible to a select few called Dreamhunters. In The Place, Dreamhunters are able to catch dreams and present them to the ordinary world as a form of entertainment. Cousins Laura Hame and Rose Tiebold are related to the most famous Dreamhunters, so everyone expects that they will both succeed in their Try (a ceremony in which people 15 and older see if they can enter The Place). Unexpectedly, the more reserved and passive of the two, Laura, succeeds while Rose who is more confident and strong doesn’t. Now both try to deal with their new unexpected futures as well as the frightening dreams Laura experiences. How close are these dreams to reality? At first I found the books a little slow to read, the beginning was a little boring and hard to understand, but as the plot advanced, I couldn’t get enough of it. The characters are so realistic, filled with their quirks, flaws, and strengths, and the plot was filled with action, twists and suspense. After I finished the second book, I was sad that it ended. This is an excellent series and I really recommend it.-Amanda M.
